Device Life Cycle #
There are three roles in a device’s life cycle:
- Manufacturer: Producer of the device responsible for test and commissioning device to cloud. Also investigates any faulty devices (RMA).
- Product Owner: Device administrator handling activation and decommission
- Integrator: Claiming and operating active devices on behalf of device user
This diagram show the life cycle states sectioned by main roles:
States #
| State | Description |
|---|---|
| STORAGE | Qualified product from production |
| ACTIVE | Device in active use. Any subscription in active state. Available for integrator provisioning |
| RMA | Faulty device. Return Merchandise Authorization. Manufacturer will investigate |
| ATTIC | Retired device |
State Transitions #
The transitions for qualified devices are one time events:
| Transition | Description |
|---|---|
| Commission | Qualified device from manufacturer |
| Activate | Either activation by product owner or auto activation after a given number of days. Available for integrator provisioning |
| RMA | Faulty device flagged for investigation |
| Re-activate | Device found working or have been repaired, so returning to active use |
| Decommission | Device end of life. Any subscription will be terminated |
Integrator Provisioning #
The integrator can only access active devices, so can’t directly control device state.
But the integrator needs to gain exclusive administrative rights to the device by using the Provisioning API.
